Unless you have been living under a rock for years, you have probably heard of the hit HBO show “Game of Thrones.” Personally, I cannot get enough of the show neither can my family or my friends. Many individuals believe that it is not only one of the best shows out today, but maybe even one of the best shows of all time ( I am obviously one of them)! “Game of Thrones” supplies the viewers with multiple story layers concerning love, hate, war, controversial topics like, slavery, abuse and disrespect against women along with numerous unique characters that somehow all intersect and make sense creating an outstanding and entertaining show.
“Game of Thrones” has multiple characters to name a few are, Tywin Lannister, The Mountain, The Hound, Sansa Stark, Ned Stark, Theon Greyjoy and The Wildlings. Like any other show, there are standout characters like, Tyrion Lannister, Jon Snow, Arya Stark, Cersei Lannister (ew), Joffrey Baratheon (double ew), The White Walkers and Daenerys Targaryen. Daenerys Targaryen has developed into the most caring, resilient and inspiring character on this show (do not get me wrong, Arya Stark is right up there but this is not about her)! Where do I even start to describe Daenerys? She is not only the most
powerful, ambitious and tough people on “Game of Thrones”, she is polite and kind to everyone she encounters. Daenerys Targaryen is the definition of GIRL POWER. However, Daenerys was not always like this.
When we first meet Daenerys Targaryen in season 1, she is the pretty, shy and cowardly sister of the rude Viserys Targaryen. It is evident she does not have any self confidence, or frankly, people on her side other than her conniving and awful brother by the way her head is always down, never up. She was subservient to everyone in her life. It seemed as though she had no woman figure and if there was one, the woman figure was not strong, opinionated or independent. She was controlled her entire life and felt that she had no foundation or a place that she could call home in her life. After she is sold off by her brother and marries Khal Drogo (becoming a Khaleesi which is a queen) and he gets rid of her terrible and dominating brother (thanks, Khal Drogo!), she has her own transformation. Khal Drogo brings out the confidence she was lacking her whole life. Khal Drogo displayed not only a different culture and other people unlike herself; he showed her real love, affection and support. These qualities she has never been shown especially from a man. Khal Drogo also showed her what “savages” are like and that there is a little bit of savagery in all of us. After his tragic death, she learns what it is like to love, be loved and then lose love. The untimely death of her husband does not stop her from conquering the world but it fuels her even more so. With her head held up high, the new and improved independent, dominating and powerful Khaleesi can’t be stopped!
As a loyal viewer, I can tell she is destined for greatness and power by her transformation and by the way she takes control of her people when Khal Drogo died. She does not take control in a swift and unjust manner like Joffrey who abused his new powerful position and tortured people (poor Sansa) rather, Daenerys makes sure everyone is secure and willing to follow her. Be warned though, if you go against her, be sure you are ready for her backlash (remember people, she has been unheard and underestimated her entire life, I am sure she has some pent up anger that she would love to blow off on an unsuspecting doubter)! From being dominated by her brother, she has sympathy for people, especially slaves, who have not been free. Daenerys has a soft spot for women who are mistreated or sadly, abused. She wants to give the women abused and all of the slaves no matter what age, gender or race they are, the justice they deserve out of the goodness of her heart. Daenerys wants to save them from a life of misery just like Khal Drogo did for her. Khal Drogo aided Daenerys to find her inner confidence and strength and that is what she wants to do for her people as well. Khal Drogo may have been the push that Daenerys needed. Ultimately, she is her own saving grace. Daenerys pushes herself to do well and be fair to all but serve some kickass revenge on those who mess with her or her people. Daenerys is resisting the stereotype of being an ordinary woman; she is unlike any kind of woman. She was never taught to fight or to command an army; these qualities have always been with her but never were shown. Her brawny army is ferocious and shrewd just like their queen. Daenerys does not see her people as play toys but as actual people with feelings and families which makes her unique to rulers in the world at this time like Joffrey or Cersei (the apple does not fall far from the tree). Daenerys is an inspiriting and true hero for not just women, but for all people. As Daenerys states, “I will answer injustice with justice.”
Two traits Daenerys acquires that stick with her throughout all of the seasons of “Game of Thrones” are honesty and kindness. However, with honesty and kindness can come the quest for control and no holds barred revenge! She had been underestimated her entire life and now is the time for her to say, “everyone push aside, Mother of Dragons is here!” With the respect she acquires from conquering lands and people along with helping every person she can, she discovers that there are good and honest people in the world. When she stops letting people walk all over and misguide her is when she becomes the queen we all know and love. Daenerys finds a devoted group; she never mistreats them and they do not misguide her. All of her people are from different places and cultures around the world and she somehow makes sure they all get along, and not only respect her but also each other. When she walks out of a burning building that really gets people believing she is this all-mighty and fair queen full of power and strength. Or maybe it is the three DRAGONS she is the mother too? Who is going to mess with a queen with three dragons who people thought never existed! Definitely not me! In all, Daenerys enemies should be less afraid of her three dragons and more scared of her. She is a force to be reckoned with when she feels disrespected or underestimated. Yes of course having three huge dragons helps but, when she puts her mind to something or is passionate about a one thing or one person, get out of her way, Mother of Dragons is coming through! She is empowered by her powerful and gigantic dragons and her qualities of honesty, quick wit, dominant and determination… but just don’t mess with her for when she states, “I will take what is mine with fire and blood” she actually means it.
